National anthem of Germany

The lyrics of the National Anthem of Germany

Deutschlandlied

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt,
Wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
Brüderlich zusammenhält.
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
Von der Etsch bis an den Belt,
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt!
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt!

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
Sollen in der Welt behalten
Ihren alten schönen Klang,
Uns zu edler Tat begeistern
Unser ganzes Leben lang –
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang!
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang!

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
Brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Sind des Glückes Unterpfand –
Blüh’ im Glanze dieses Glückes,
Blühe, deutsches Vaterland!
Blüh’ im Glanze dieses Glückes,
Blühe, deutsches Vaterland!

Song of Germany

Germany, Germany above all,
Above all in the world,
When, for protection and defense,
It always stands brotherly together.
From the Meuse to the Memel,
From the Adige to the Belt,
Germany, Germany above all,
Above all in the world!

German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German song,
Shall retain in the world
Their old beautiful chime
And inspire us to noble deeds
During all of our life.
German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German song!

Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland!
Towards these let us all strive
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the safeguards of fortune;
Flourish in the radiance of this fortune,
Flourish, German fatherland!

The National Anthem of Germany was written by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben and composed by Joseph Haydn.

The motto of Germany: Unity and justice and freedom.

    1. Fun fact: The melody composed by Haydn in 1796/97 was actually called “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser” (English: “God Save Emperor Francis”) and was a personal anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later the National Anthem of the Austrian Empire (1826-1918).After WWI the Austrian Empire was dismantled and became the Austria we know today with their new Anthem “Land der Berge, Land am Strome” after WWII in 1946. In 1922 Germany used the melody with another text through WWII. They still do so today but with a new different text.
